I'll go back to Iceland for my fourth attempt to make a solo winter ski crossing of the Vatnajokull ice cap in February 2004.
At this time (December 2003) I'm refining my plans, but essentially I plan on a 200-mile trek, from West to East and then turning around for the 'round trip' back to the West side. Updated plans will be posted on the expedition home page.
My (slightly outdated) 2002 gear list is available for students and anyone else interested here; it will be revised as I continue to refine my plans.
UPDATE: In the real world, the return journey was not possible: I spent 29 days just getting across the ice cap, travelling only 11 days, the rest being pinned down by weather or with making repairs, scouting a route through melt rivers early on, and so on. Thus, by the time I reached the other side of the ice cap, my food reserve was not sufficient to safely make the return trek. Nevertheless, the one-way crossing was about 157km (98.9 miles), and the experience was invaluable. Your best bet for getting a fell for the expedition is in the pictures and videos on this site: I'm writing a narrative, but it will not be available for a while: first as a magazine article, later, as a book. I'll note those on this site when they're 'locked in' with publishers.
