Here I am looking over the terrain, first time out of the tent in four days; the landscape of cracked ice has been transformed by a benign-looking blanket of new snow. The pleasantly rolling, snowy terrain is actually a vast and lethal trap, which I avoided. In the right foreground is one of the small flags I was using to mark my way through the maze of crevasses, shuttling my gear ahead in manageable loads. Image copyright Cameron M. Smith, 2002.
