At the crevasse encounter near Grimsvotn it began to precipitate freezing rain, one of the worst things a person can encounter outdoors. Here, you can see the 5mm (quarter-inch) glaze of ice I was accumulating as I carried my gear upslope, ferrying loads to lighten the sled-hut so that I could drag it upslope and ´out of the trap´.
