Withe the crevasses concealed, I didn't dare keep the sled buckled to my harness: I towed it down the Skeidararjokull by hand, probing the snow and ice with an ice axe in the other...This turned my hand into a claw-like, frozen hook, but it was effective. The sled, and everything in it, having absorbed several days of freezing rain, now weighs about 300lb (150kg), about two times it's normal weight! It was a real job to keep this from dragging me into the concealed crevasses, but I was 12 days into the expedition and feeling well-adapted to my environment. Image copyright Cameron M. Smith, 2002.
