This is a place I call 'Misery Camp'. I'm down the glacier (the edge of the Vatnajokull is just behind me), and it's good that I'm alive and well...but everything I have is soaked, I am cold and wet, I have failed in my second attempt to get onto the ice cap, and I have only the prospect of returning home defeated to think about...Not a good day. I unpacked everything and cooked and ate in the rain, not even trying to keep dry any more. Despite all of that, I can't wait to get back for another shot. Image copyright Cameron M. Smith, 2002.
